The Friends of Sleepy Hollow (FOSH) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and charitable organization.  Our mission is community development by saving historic homes in need of significant restoration and by beautifying Plainfield’s historic streets and neighborhoods.  The historic homes gracing these neighborhoods date back from the late 19th century to the first decades of the 1900s.  Though Plainfield has an abundance of beautiful historic neighborhoods - like Sleepy Hollow, Netherwood Heights, Hillside Avenue, Crescent Avenue, Putnam-Watchung, and Van Wyck Brooks – many of the historic properties in these neighborhoods are in need of significant restoration that is often unaffordable to the residents of Plainfield.  Plainfield is a special-needs district, designated as an SDA District and previously called an Abbott District, with low to medium income earners for whom the cost of large-scale restoration is unaffordable.  But if this restoration does not occur, these properties may be torn down and lost forever.  Sadly, many of the historic homes that once existed – significant in architecture and heritage - have already suffered this fate.  As has already been accomplished to great effect by the Preservation Society of Charleston in South Carolina and by the National Trust in the UK, it is our mission to save and restore our remaining architectural treasures so they can be enjoyed by generations to come.

We accomplish our mission through volunteerism and fundraising.  Volunteerism encompasses all activities needed to upkeep our historic neighborhoods, from landscaping to painting the local train station or the home of a neighbor who can’t afford a contractor or is too elderly to do the work themselves.  Fundraising is focused on two types of charitable funds, the Beautification Fund and the Historic Restoration Fund.

Beautification Fund: Money donated to the Beautification Fund is dedicated to smaller scale projects, such as covering the cost of paints and materials needed for volunteer activities, and purchasing neighborhood street signs and house plaques that enhance the identity and charm of our historic neighborhoods.

Historic Preservation Fund: Money donated to the Historic Preservation Fund is dedicated exclusively for the purpose of saving homes in need of significant restoration.  FOSH is currently in the process of raising sufficient charitable donations to acquire and restore its first historic home.  To accomplish this goal we will need the support of big-hearted donors who value community and heritage.  If a property can be acquired and restored, it will then be sold with 100% of the net proceeds of the sale reinvested in the community by acquiring a second historic property in need of significant restoration, and so on and so forth.  With all assets in the Fund reinvested toward the singular purpose of historic preservation, the Fund will become a community-building engine dedicated to revitalizing and preserving Plainfield’s historic neighborhoods.

Please consider contributing.  All donations are tax deductible.  Every donation, regardless of size, helps carry out our vital mission of saving Plainfield’s architectural and historic heritage.
